Satan’s Exploitation of Our Unconscious Mind

Whether we like it or not, all people have an unconscious mind, and all of us are subject to its influence. In my previous article I stated that the unconscious mind has control over the conscious mind and that this power of control is often spiritual in nature. I explained that evil people take advantage of their knowledge about the unconscious mind and use it to program the minds of satanically ritually abused persons to go against their conscious mind and believe and do things the conscious mind of itself would not participate in.
The point I would like to make in this article is that since all people have an unconscious mind and are under its influence, Satan, who is the god of this world (as stated in 1 Corinthians 4:4), uses every opportunity that exists to try to plant evil motivations in the unconscious minds of all of us. All too often we Christians think we don’t have to be concerned about such a thing because we are saved, we have the Holy Spirit and we have the mind of Christ, all things that are promised us in the Bible. However, we are still human with human weaknesses and in order to preserve and strengthen the precious gifts God has given us, we need to pursue holiness of mind and actions. We may have the mind of Christ, but most often it is buried beneath a load of worldly knowledge, attitudes and selfish motivations. If we fail to daily renew our mind with the Scriptures and draw insight and strength from our relationship with God through prayer, our carnal, selfish nature will prosper and grow while the spiritual mind in us (the mind of Christ) languishes.
One mistake we must guard against is thinking that a daily brief devotional time is all we need and then we can do whatever we want for the rest of the day. According to a Nielsen report, the average American spends five hours a day watching television. As Francis Schafer taught in his book, The Church at the End of the Twentieth Century, any information we read is filtered by our mind through reason. In other words we judge what we are reading. However, information that comes into our mind through videos, television and movies bypasses our reason and goes directly into our mind. He called the former hot communication and the latter cool communication.
If the average Christian spends thirty minutes a day in devotional time and five hours a day watching television, what is going to have the greatest influence? Of course it will be the cool communication because it is going directly into his mind without being filtered through reason. Think about it. The worldly garbage and lies are going directly into our mind without being censored…and a lot of that is going into our unconscious mind. Let me rephrase that, a lot of Satan’s lies and unholy influences are going directly into our mind. We may do a little censoring, but we are feeding the wrong side of our nature. Perhaps this is why so much of the church looks just like the world and many churches are closing down for lack of attendance. Satan, the god of this world, is powerfully exploiting this weakness in believers’ lives.
Add to this the fact that Satan, as the Bible tells us, is the prince and power of the air, and it gets really scary. Do you watch the nightly news and think you are getting the truth? You are actually getting a lot of propaganda—propaganda that is leading our beloved country right down the tubes into socialism and even communism, both enemies of Christ and his church. Have you ever noticed that every problem in every drama is solved without God or prayer, or that every nature documentary mentions evolution? In how many movies do the hero and heroine wind up living together without the covenant of marriage? Perhaps this is why more and more young people today are choosing to live together rather than get married.
If we think a few Bible verses or Christian school attendance holds more influence over our children than seeing beautiful Hollywood movie stars in bed together in living color on our giant TV screens in our living rooms, we are greatly deceived. Our younger children are almost all entertained by Walt Disney which continually exposes them to magic, ungodly fantasy and hidden subliminal suggestions carefully embedded into many of their movies. You can find many examples of these subliminal messages on the Internet.
My husband’s and my answers to these above questions caused us to take our flat-screen television down off the wall where it was mounted and get rid of it. It was one of the best decisions we have ever made. We plan to someday put a window in where the TV was so we can look out at the beautiful scenery that surrounds our mountain cabin home. Without TV in our house, we share the Scriptures more, pray together more, relate to each other more and find life is much better without it.
There was a time when many people considered America to be a Christian nation—not that that was actually true, but we do have some Christian roots. According to different polls, most Americans consider themselves to be Christians. With that in mind, it would be wise to consider the curses recorded in the Bible that came upon God’s people when they disobeyed him and turned away from him to worship false gods. You can find a list of them in Deuteronomy 28 beginning at verse 15. Many of these are happening in America right now. It’s not that God would curse us, but he can’t protect us when we willfully disobey him and turn away from him as a nation. Every time the Hebrew nation turned away from God, God warned them over and over again through his prophets. Finally, because of their disobedience, the things he warned them about came upon them. Other nations came against them, warred against them and took away their land. His people were taken away from their homes and made to be slaves in foreign lands. Their crops failed, plagues came upon them, they lost their freedoms and many other heinous things happened to them.
We may not be able to change what is happening in our nation at this late date, but we can make sure that we are in right standing with God. The Bible tells us that if we will seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, then all things will be provided that we need to sustain our lives so that we can live in relationship with God (Matthew 6:33). If we repent and work on renewing our minds, Jesus will help us. He will help us get the garbage out and replace it with his blessed truth. He can even work on cleaning out our unconscious mind as we pray, repent and ask him to, but we must be careful to remove the evil influences around us as much as possible. We need to find out what God wants of us and do it. Knowing it is not enough. We must live it before him.
Paul the apostle tells us in Philippians, “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.” May we all choose to take this wisdom and incorporate it into our lives.
